【Synopsis】
A monk from Unrin-in in the capital (near present-day Daitokuji Temple in
Kyoto) is about to complete his summer Zen retreat. To honor the flowers
he has offered each day, he performs a memorial service for them.

At that moment, a woman appears and offers white flowers. She says the
flowers are yugao (moonflower). Without giving her name, she only says she once lived near Gojo and then quietly disappears.

Soon after, a local man arrives and tells the monk the story of Hikaru Genji
and Lady Yugao. He suggests that the woman the monk met was likely
Yugao’s spirit and advises him to visit the Gojo area.

When the monk goes to Gojo, he finds a small hut where yūgao flowers bloom beside a Hajitomi (a two-panel lattice shutter in which the upper panel can
be lifted open). As he begins to pray for Yugao’s soul, the Hajitomi slowly
lifts, and Yugao’s ghost appears. She recalls her love with Genji and
performs a graceful dance while remembering his poem about Yugao.

Entrusting the monk with prayers for her repose, she disappears back behind the Hajitomi at dawn.
