Introduction of Programs and Performers

■Ikebana

When Hideyoshi made a visit to the Maeda Residence in Osaka, he noticed that flowers were beautifully decorated in a tatami room which expressed a feeling of hospitality. Enjoy the world of ikebana that Hideyoshi was welcomed with on his visit.

Kosho Nakayama

Kosho Nakayama concurrently holds positions as the Vice Chairman of Mishoryu Nakayama Bunpokai, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Nakayama Bunpo Kaikan Foundation, and Executive Director of Japan Ikebana Art Association. Since 1994 he has led and supervised an ikebana course for visually impaired people.

■Kyogen “Kuchimane”

Hideyoshi also took a great pleasure in performing Noh and Kyogen himself. It is said that the “Kuchimane” play was once performed by a trio comprising of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Tokugawa Ieyasu and Maeda Toshie at the imperial palace.

Outline

A master, who buys barreled sake from an acquaintance, wishes to exchange a nice cup of sake in a cheerful company, so he orders his servant to invite some people for a drink. The servant is clueless about who exactly to call upon, but eventually finds some people to bring home. However it turns out they are already heavily drunk…

Takashi Zenchiku

Takashi Zenchiku is the eldest son and apprentice of Chuichiro Zenchiku. He is also the great-grandson of Yagoro Zenchiku, a Kyogen actor who was once designated as a “living national treasure.” Takashi Zenchiku made his debut at the age of 5 in the Kyogen play “Utsubozaru.” Along with his brother Ryuhei, they hosted the Zenchiku Brothers Kyogen Performance Event.

Ryuhei Zenchiku

Ryuhei Zenchiku is the second son and apprentice of Chuichiro Zenchiku. He made his debut at the age of 5 in the Kyogen play “Utsubozaru.”

■Han-noh “Tamura”

The performing art of Noh suffered great hardships during the Warring States Period (16 C.), but it was Hideyoshi who helped revive it. The tradition of using elegant costumes in Noh performances is said to have been established by his personal preferences. It is said that the play called “Tamura” was masterfully performed by Hideyoshi.

Outline

On a spring day, a group of monks are heading for Kiyomizu Temple. Along the way, they encounter a mysterious young boy sitting under a cherry blossom tree in full bloom. The young boy starts talking about the origin of Kiyomizu Temple. He gives suggestions on popular places to visit and eventually accompanies the monks. They all spend a wonderful time exploring the place together. However, when night falls, the group of monks enter the Tamura Hall where they notice that the boy has suddenly vanished. Then they hear a voice saying “If you wish to know my true identity, please watch where I am going.” On that night, as the monks are reading their sutras, a ghost appears before them…

Experience how the world of Noh portrays the resurrected spirit of Sakanoe Tamuramaro, a military general from the Heian Period.
